Beetroot Poriyal

Beetroot is a very nutritious vegetable. It purifies blood. Most of them do not like it because of its bland taste. But with this beetroot recipe, you can prepare a tasty fry, which is liked by everyone. It can be had with chapathi or can be taken as a side dish with sambar and rice.

Serves: 2-3


  • 500 gms beetroot
  • ½ tsp mustard
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 8 green chilies
  • ½ cup fresh grated coconut
  • 1 onion
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • Few sprigs of curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 5 tsp refined oil


Boil beetroot in water and peel the skin. Cut the vegetable into small pieces and keep aside.

Grind together grated coconut, green chilies, cumin seeds, chopped onions and garlic in a mixer. Do not add water. Masala is now ready.

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard, cumin and curry leaves. Fry till mustard and cumin crackle. Then put in the masala and fry till dry.

Then mix beetroot pieces to this. Add salt and cook for 10 minutes closing the lid. Beetroot poriyal is ready.
