Avial is a typical vegetable curry flavored with curd and coconut. It is a popular dish in Kerala and Tamil cuisines. This thick mixture of curd and mixed vegetables tastes best with rice.

  • 1 drumstick
  • 4-5 string beans
  • 1 small piece (100 g) yam
  • 1 piece (100 g) ash gourd
  • 1 carrot
  • 4-5 beans
  • ½ coconut
  • 6-8 green chillies
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • ¾ cup curd
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • Salt to taste


Peel the yam, ash gourd and carrot. Cut these and all other vegetables into thin and long pieces. Mix with turmeric and cook with some water.

Meanwhile grate the coconut, grind coarsely with green chillies and cumin, transfer into a vessel.

When vegetables are done, remove and add to the coconut masala. Add salt to taste and half cup water. Put over fire and simmer for 2 minutes.

Add beaten curd, coconut oil and remove from fire. Serve hot with rice.
